The
YETHOLM SINFONIA 2010
LAST ORCHESTRA IN SCOTLAND
WHAT THE PAPERS SAY ...
What the papers say about us is, alas, very little, and that very infrequent.
Official statistics prove that more people in this country take part in
amateur music-making than take part in amateur sporting activities.
Despite this astonishing fact, our otherwise admirable local newspapers will print pages and pages and pages of amateur sports reports, together with copious photographs
(which most often clearly shew that there are very small numbers of people watching)
but will devote very little space to the arts, and are particularly mean towards real music.
To be fair, these local newspapers usually will print a press release (often truncated) in advance about a forthcoming local musical event, but subsequent reports of these events are very rarely written or printed. End of rant.
Nevertheless, here are some of the comments which did see the light of day:
The orchestra, brought together by The Yetholm Sinfonia director, Geoffrey Emerson, was a dramatic force in its own right. From shimmering strings to fluttering woodwind, from clamouring brass to thundering drums, the orchestral textures and colours were a delight and a revelation. What a terrifying moment when the echoing trumpets raised the dead! In fact, what a terrifying work Verdi's Requiem is.
